| The Pyrenees are one of the major mountain ranges in Europe and the last bastion of the European Brown bear. Unfortunately the bear is on the way out, but with careful wildlife conservation many species of eagle and vulture have made a come back. There are thousands of lakes to picnic by and spectacular views from passes. The observatory of the Pic du Midi dominates the area, and you can reach this by cable car, rewarding you with stunning views and scenery. |
| In summer, there is extensive mountain walking, rock climbing, canyoning, rafting and fishing. In autumn, the forests turn into beautiful shades of red, and the local markets sell a wide variety of wild mushrooms. |
|
| In winter, there is skiing and we are 1 hour away from the ski resorts of St Lary and La Mongie, which when twinned with Bareges offers a huge complex of ski runs, as yet undiscovered by other countries. So the queues for ski lifts are short and the pistes uncrowded. Early spring sees the hillsides covered with wild flowers - probably the best time for photography too. |

This is a typical group outing to the lac d'Oo - lunching by the mountain hut. This is an easy walk. |

For the more adventurous, the mountain huts provide welcome meals and the higher huts are frequently in spectacular positions. Manuela adopts spectacular positions too, but more of that later……. |
